At the Paris Salon in October 1976, Ferrari introduced an updated version of the mid-engined 365 GT4 BB. The new 512 Berlinetta Boxer offered more power than its predecessor, with the horizontally opposed 12-cylinder engine enlarged to displace 5 liters. The model also featured dry sump lubrication, a twin-plate clutch, and a wider rear track and bodywork than the 365 GT4 BB. Never officially sold in the US, the carbureted 512 Boxer is particularly rare in the States. Just 929 examples were built between 1976 and 1981, and many enthusiasts consider the model to be the pinnacle of Ferrari’s flat-12 road car evolution.

Chassis 30401 shows limited mileage and uncommon originality, with a recent mechanical refurbishment. Kept for several years in the mid-Atlantic region, this Boxer emerged from storage in 2014. The consignor states that the Boxer received a full engine rebuild by North Coast Exotics in Cleveland, Ohio, including the installation of new bearings, seals, valves, and guides. The water pump and starter were rebuilt, the tensioners and pulleys were changed, and the hoses and exhaust were replaced with proper components.

After the engine work was complete, the 512 was offered for sale and acquired in August 2014 by EMG Cars, a dealership in Phoenix. Following an inspection by the marque specialists at Fast Cars in Redondo Beach, California, the clutch was replaced, the carburetors were rebuilt, and the car was soon purchased by the consignor.

Recognizing the minimally driven Berlinetta’s potential, the current owner commenced a sympathetic refurbishment that addressed the electrical system and chassis elements such as the brakes and suspension (including new Koni shocks). The car had apparently been modified with federalized bumpers when initially imported to the US. As documented by invoices, many parts were ordered from the famed Algar Ferrari; and the esteemed Richard Mullin Coachbuilding in Malvern, Pennsylvania, was retained to restore the coachwork to the original bumperless specifications.

Currently displaying approximately 23,008 km (14,297 miles), this carbureted 512 Berlinetta Boxer is believed to retain its original interior and much of its original factory paint, as well as the matching-numbers flat-12 Boxer engine. Authentically returned to the more elegant bumperless European configuration, this splendid Ferrari offers striking originality suitable for concours d’elegance or FCA display. Future ownership may also celebrate this car’s preparation for road use in the spirit of the 512 competition cars that roared down the Mulsanne Straight in 1970.
