 1960 AC Aceca Bristol Coupé
Chassis no. BE771
Engine no. 100AB2 3117

The Model – From its beginning, AC Cars of England has always been one of the most innovative manufacturers in the industry. Hand-craftsmanship has limited production but these sporty vehicles have always been legendary performers throughout Europe. During the 1950’s the little Ace sports roadster claimed many victories. When the Aceca coupe was developed using the same ladder frame construction of the AC Ace, championed by John Tojeiro, it also won critical acclaim. The Aceca featured hand-formed aluminum body panels that reminded many of the styling of the Ferrari 166 and winning praises when it debuted at the 1954 Earls Court Car show. With full foru-wheel independent suspension, it was a superb handling machine that posted a number of wins through the UK and Europe...

The Car – This Aceca coupe was treated to a full restoration in the late 1980’s by Spencer Lane-Jones, one of Britain’s most respected specialists for both AC Cars and Bristol motors. A period correct replacement engine was installed and the car was converted to left-hand drive at that time. Finished in Rouge Irise exterior color it presents an elegant look with the original tan leather seats. All new wood trim was used on the dashboard, and brightwork throughout the car has been brilliantly re-plated. Used very sparingly since its completion this car recently received a new set of tires and wheels while the engine has recently been brought up to top mechanical condition. In recent road-tests of this this splendid car it was reported as being the best handling sport coupe our driver has experienced in quite some time....

The success of Cliff Davis' Tojeiro sports-racer prompted AC Cars to put the design into production in 1954 as the Ace. The Davis car's pretty Ferrari 166-inspired barchetta body work was retained, as was John Tojeiro'stwin-tube ladder frame chassis and Cooper-influenced all-independent suspension, but the power unit was AC's own venerable, 2.0-litre, long-stroke six. This overhead-camshaft engine originated in 1919 and with a modest 80bhp (later 100bhp) on tap, endowed the Ace with respectable, if not outstanding, performance. A hardtop version - the fastback-styled Aceca coupé – debuted at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1954. The Aceca's hatchback body was constructed in hand-formed aluminium over a tubular steel framework, while the tubular chassis was more substantially built than the Ace's. To reduce noise levels within the cabin, AC mounted all major components on rubber bushes. The result was a well-engineered, light in weight and extremely pretty GT car in the best AC tradition...

Very few alterations were made to the Ace and Aceca apart from a change of engine for 1956 when the more-powerful (up to 130bhp) 2.0-litre Bristol six-cylinder engine became available, while towards the end of production the 2.6-litre Ford Zephyr engine was on offer also. The combination of a fine-handling chassis and a decent power-to-weight ratio - in Bristol-engined form the car could touch 120mph - helped the Ace version to numerous successes in production sports car racing, arguably its finest achievement being a 1st-in-class and 7thoverall finish at Le Mans in 1959.

A right-hand drive model subsequently converted to left-hand drive, 'BE771' is one of only 169 original Bristol-engined Acecas built. Supplied by Harman Motor Services of Wolverhampton to L Gordon Flint Esq on 22 Jan 1960 this Acecas believed to have had four owners before being acquired by the Earl of Mexborough in 1987. Restored at that time it remained substantially unused in his collection until recently. Although the engine currently fitted did not start life in this particular car it was rebuilt to Bristol sports specification by Bristol engine specialists TT Workshops at the time of restoration. The car has been thoroughly recommissioned by AC and Bristol specialist Spencer Lane-Jones, repainted in its original Rouge Irise colour andre-trimmed to complement the original beige seats. With new interior woodwork, new chrome, etc it looks superb. Benefiting from new wheels and tyres, and fresh from rolling road engine set up by Stanton Motorsports, with a lively engine giving good power - it now drives as well as it looks. Offered with UK V5C registration document, current MOT and history file.
